I really wanted to give this book 5 stars because it is a great book that every person who wants to try natural birth should read. I gave it a 4 because there were a few minor critiques that I have, but overall it is really valuable and necessary information for taking control of your birth. I am writing this at the hospital while my wife is in labor. Weve ended up down the constant fetal monitoring, then pitocin when things werent progressing fast enough, then fentanyl, then epidural, withFirst let me say that I believe in the Bradley method as a practice for birthing babies. Erika and I took the course for our twins; it proved to be a wonderful experience, and excellent training for vaginal birth (at least we imagine it is since we are still waiting for our first vaginal birth. If this is your first exposure to natural childbirth lit, it is OK. However, comparing notes with other natural birth couples, it seems like the Bradley Method appeals to folks who want to bridge the knowledge gap-- mom is a compulsive researcher, the partner is excited and supportive but more interested in the tldr so they can play a helpful role. Great concept. Very difficult in theory! Especially when you have a labor that isn't like the labors described in this book. Some very outdated info though as hospitals have progressed a lot since initial publication.
I understand that Dr. Bradley has helped many people, but this book is tragically outdated when it comes to its social views. The medicine itself is out-of-date, and worse, Dr. Bradley is stuck in a long-past era; in the modern day he comes across as arrogant and egotistical while belittling and degrading the birthing individual, who he believes lacks the instinct to birth without a (male) coach. Dr. Bradley also aggressively pushes on the reader his version of the right kind of family and
I basically skimmed this book, only really reading the chapters that interested me (the actual Bradley method during labor and birth). Dr. Bradley cracks me up! I realize his study of childbirth and the resulting methods were revolutionary for his time, but reading the book now he comes across as an old-fashioned, arrogant, nut-job. I don't think it's fair for people to give this book 1 or 2 stars because of Dr. Bradley's old fashioned 1950's view point. Which yes, tends to be a bit on the patronizing side and falls into typical gender roles back in the day. If you can look past that, and the fact that the book is a bit tough to get through because of the repetitiveness, the odd writing (the fifth edition updaters Marjie, Jay and James Hathaway will write in paragraph or two in the middle of a chapter), and nonsensical
