With Their Backs to the World is really as its subtitle suggests, portraits of Serbia. It offers a cross section of Serbian society (I don't know how representative) and their coming to grips with their changing society and how it interacts with the world from 1999-2004. Ultimately it portrays Serbians as people like any other, although many of whom seem to be in the grip of hysterical conspiracist mania as a reaction to the changes that they see. I have found her work insightful and far-reaching in the past, and I admire the way in which she tries to present as many viewpoints as she possibly can. This the third iteration of this book. In 1999, Seierstad first went to Serbia and interviewed 14 different people about their lives under Slobodan Milosovic. She told their stories in a book. Soon after this book was published, she returned to Serbia. The place blew up again and she added to their stories in a second iteration. Finally, in 2004, with things more peaceful in Serbia, Seierstad returned once again to add to their stories in a third version of the book. This is the one I read.

This book contains a series of portraits of people in Serbia, collected over three visits between 1999 and 2004.
