Description To Books Rule Britannia

"A diverse and engrossing cast of characters...provocative, diverting." --Chicago Tribune

Emma wakes up one morning to an apocalyptic world. The cozy existence she shares with her grandmother, an eccentric retired actress known to all as Madam, has been shattered: there's no post, no telephone, no radio - and an American warship sits in the harbor.

As the two women piece together clues about the 'friendly' military occupation on their doorstep, family, friends and neighbours gather round to protect their heritage. In this chilling novel of the future, Daphne du Maurier explores the implications of a political, economic and military alliance between Britain and the United States.

Judgment About Books Rule Britannia
So prescientLovely book to read. Who would have thought that she would have foretold the ructions of the current day all the way back then.

Have always loved the author's books. This is a new one for me and I was initially doubtful because it was a "futuristic" type story written in early 70's. But the storytelling is superb. Told by a 20 year old young woman in a household of an aging grandmother and a group of adopted young boys, living on the coast of Cornwall. The UK has left the Europeans and bonded with the USA in order to save the country from ruin. A "union" of the two was devised, but the Americans seem to make it an

This book has an unusual premise- the U.S. takes over the U.K. with a thinly disguised plan to unite the two countries for economic reasons. The protagonist is 20 year old Emma, who wavers between following the rules and following her madcap grandmother's resistance efforts. Madam is a retired grand dame of the stage who has taken in six orphan boys. She is not a strict disciplinarian, and the household is rambunctious, which tries Emma's patience at times. The novel is full of colorful

Hmmmm. Not Daphne's best ever. Weirdly contorted historical 'what if' in which US invade, though seemingly initially invited by the British Government, and by their high handed approach and attempt to 'americanize' Britain it all goes horribly wrong. The concept, once again, could have been enthralling and in the hands of the normally unfaltering du Maurier should have been but the whole story was just unconvincing. Not so much the overall theme which was, after all, a flight of fancy but just

Du Mauriers novel is difficult to classify. I almost want to identify it as a young adult novel, since many of the novels main characters are under the age of twenty. Even the various adults who appear and disappear throughout the novel are childlike in appearance and action. At times, the reader feels as if the children are the ones in charge here, since they seem to have the most dominant presence. Of the the seven or so du Maurier novels Ive so far read, this is by far the wackiest in regard

This was such a surprise, not least because I thought I had heard of all du Maurier's books, and read most of them. But this, her last, was new to me...Written in the early seventies and set in a fictional late seventies, it tells the story of a few days in the life of one eccentric family in Cornwall, when the Americans 'invade' and the State of USUK is set up.By turns hilarious, banal and profound, prescient and muddle-headed, naive and knowing, make no mistake - there is darkness at the heart

Emma awakes one morning to the sound of aircraft overhead. An American warship is at anchor in the bay, and US Marines are making their way through the fields. Following its exit from the Common Market (European Union), Britain, with high unemployment and close to bankruptcy, has formed a coalition with America. So opens Rule Britannia, in a rural area on the coast of Cornwall, where Emma lives with Mad, her grandmother, who has adopted six boys. The arrival of the US Marines is intended to be a
