CJ Cherryh is the premier writer of what I think of as statecraft science-fiction. This is the stuff that occurs before the bullets start to fly that determines when they fly, how many of them fly and who they are aimed at. Its what goes on before Seal Team Six is dispatched, though we do get to see some of the running and gunning, particularly when things go wrong or as John F Kennedy used to say, Some dumb s.o.b doesnt get the word.Deceiver is the 11th book of the Foreigner series that details

Eleven books into this series and Im still surprised at the end of each by the growth of my emotional attachment to certain characters, and by my ever-increasing admiration for the authors skill in creating a complex culture rife with realistic tensions and intrigue. And now I look forward to Book 12.

Love this series, it continues to delight.

As seems so typical of the works of this author, this story is tedious and laden with emotion. The principals seem weak and powerless, victims of events and the will of the ruthless. This is the eleventh of the twelve novels in the "Foreigner" series, so it ends rather abruptly, to be completed in the next book of the series.

Again one hell of a ride for Bren-paidhi in a very short period time inside the book. I totally enjoy the fact that since his return to the Atevi world he has become so much more self-assured in his role as paidhi and his standing within the atevi associations - so much so that now his closest atevi connections, basically the dowager and the lord of the compact, no longer throw him into situations just to stir things up, they do so in the knowledge that he can profitably influence outcomes in

This book was very boring and made me drop the series once and for all; things just happen at a very glacial pace and I just lost any residual interest in the same happenings (well this time Barb and Toby have more central roles, but still...); when the series is done once and for all, I may go back to check the intervening novels, but not until then

As this excellent series continues with book #11 overall (the middle book of the fourth triad), Bren continues to be fully embroiled in multiple dangers, both physical (via attempted assassination), and political. Cherryh's great skill at culture creation and world-building is on full display here. The audiobook edition continues to be perfectly narrated by Daniel Thomas May.
