Description During Books Our Happy Time

Already a wildly popular bestseller in South Korea, this gripping and passionate debut novel is a death row love story of crime, punishment, and forgiveness—vividly told by the exquisitely talented Gong Ji-young.

Yu-Jung, beautiful, wealthy, and bright, is lying in her hospital bed, recovering from her third suicide attempt, when she receives a life-changing visit. Her no-nonsense aunt, a nun, appears by her side and suggests Yu-Jung accompany her on a charitable visit to death row. At her lowest ebb, Yu-Jung is resistant. But something compels her to go to the prison. There she meets Yun-Soo, a convicted murderer who will soon be put to death. Though she is repulsed by his crimes, something about the depth of his suffering strikes a chord in her. Shaken by their encounter, she returns to visit him the next week. And the next…

Through their weekly, hour-long meetings, Yu-Jung and Yun-Soo slowly reveal to each other the dark secrets of their pasts and the hidden traumas that have shaped their lives. In doing so they form a deep, unbreakable bond, helping one another overcome their demons. But Yun-Soo’s hands are always in cuffs, the prison officers are always in the background, and they can never lose sight of the fact that their happy time together is tragically brief.

Gracefully poetic and ideal for fans of Kyung-Sook Shin’s Please Look After Mother, Our Happy Time is a passionate and heartbreaking love story as well as an important, hard-hitting, and compassionate fable.

Weigh Up Out Of Books Our Happy Time
Such a powerful read! It opens your eyes in many different ways.

Not my usual type of book I have to admit, I read it because of my deep interest in korean culture and literature rather than the specific subject matter - and 공지영 is a big star in Korea - so difficult for me to compare to English equivalents. The writing is fairly simple, and it doesn't merit my rating for it's purely literary merits. But it certainly packs a powerful emotional punch and covers some quite deep topics - religion, redemption, rehabilitation, forgiveness, penal policy, hypocrisy

Wow. This was a gem of a read for me. I am so glad I stumbled across this novel. If I were the type to read book descriptions I would have more than likely passed. This is a novel that has strong religious tones. The exact type of novel I avoid. However, this was so much more. This is a novel about acceptance. Acceptance not only of others, but also yourself. It's a story about finding oneself. It's a story about looking beyond your past and trying to imagine a future. A future where you find

I haven't read any books with character in a death row before. This was the first. Kind of clueless at the beginning with both chapters and blue notes-- which later I found out one for Yujeong and another was a diary written by Yunsu. I love the bond between the two characters-- how Yujeong could open up to Yunsu, having real conversation. Telling him about her past and all. It was difficult for her, I was thinking why she was unhappy and hating her mom that much until I read the part where she

This was hauntingly beautiful. I did not expect this kind of story, I actually thought this was going to be a cute silly love story, maybe get a little bit of drama in the middle, but I was so, so wrong. This story is captivating, raw and beautifully written. It makes you feel so many things, it gets you confused and you get easily attached to the characters, even if you don't want to. Our protagonist can come up a little bit selfish but the longer you're with her, you get to understand her and

After finishing this book, I was left with an indescribable feeling. Everyone is damaged by something. Can love heal their wounds? Love conquers all! Yes, of course. But I do believe the ones who feel loved are only able to love. Likewise, the forgiveness, the ones who have been forgiven only grant an ability to forgive. It is not easy to forgive someone but forgiving yourself is the hardest. It is a good book for depressed people even the story is quite depressing. It maybe give them something

(Review first published in Shelf Awareness)Mun Yu-Jung lies in a hospital bed after her third failed suicide attempt. Once a famous pop star lauded for her single hit, she is now an angry, impulsive young woman. When her religious aunt offers an alternative to therapy, Yu-Jung grudgingly agrees to accompany her on visits to a death-row inmate for a month. Both Yu-Jung and Jeong Yun-Soo, the prisoner, believe themselves beyond redemption; they've heard from others that they are garbage and a
