There's a theory about the instigation of the French Revolution -- and I'm not saying I ascribe to it, but I certainly am enamored of it -- that there was so little knowledge of food science that wheat and other grains were stored without regard for safety or preservation. So much of the grain used for baking grew moldy and fermented to the point that many French, especially the poor, were basically walking around gnawing on crusty chunks of LSD. (Marie-Antoinette: "Why is everyone acting so crazy?" Mirabeau: "I'm afraid, my queen, they be trippin'.") What's my point? For those of you who haven't already lost interest: That Nicholas Gurewitch has been poking his hand in a kindred breadbox. His work feels like tiny fables from a land of altered states, and I absolutely love it! As I began reading this book, I formulated a theory about the development of his artistic vision in which he was driven to near-madness by the perverse inanity and unfathomable longevity of the "Family Circus" strip, then about halfway through the book THERE IT IS -- a spoof of little Billy and crew sporting their usual pluck but with bloody toothless grins. I knew it! You may wonder: I'm sure this book is cool and all, but why is she going on and on about it? Insomnia, my friends, pure unadulterated insomnia. But seriously, check it out, you'll dig it, or I'll bake you a trippin' brioche and you can try it again.

Write-Up Regarding Books The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and Other Stories

The print collection of one of the best comics ever: The Perry Bible Fellowship. (A title which tells you absolutely nothing about the comic itself.) Rather than try to awkwardly explain what the comic is about. I'll simply say that it is brilliantly funny, surreal, and (atypically for me) safe for work. (By which I mean that it's not full of cussing and boobs. Odds are you'll still get in trouble if you try to read a comic at work.) Here's a link so you can read some of the comic yourself.

I love that this looks like a kids book. My wife placed it with my daughters Garfield and Big Nate books in a pile and scolded her for not picking up her books. Ha. But, no this book is hilariously dark. Every now and then one may offend you, but thats probably the point. Probably my favorite short panel comic currently out there.

A colleague brought this comics collection - a favorite of her husband - for me to read, remarking that "it seemed like [my] brand of humor," and, I must say, her diagnosis of my sick-f*ck sensibilities was right on the nose. The drawings in this book are stylistically all over the map and Gurewitch's homages to Hergé, Chester Gould, Charles Addams, Robert Crumb and Bil Keane, among other cartoonists and illustrators, are loving and superbly realized. I liked it! I could relate to much of the writing angst and decisions about stepping away from the novel writing. Not sure Id recommend it for non-writers though.

Super quick read. Very funny, unique comics. A bit naughty at times. Some made me laugh out loud. I'll try to find some and share them on Facebook. I like this guy's mind.
