THE ENGLISHMAN’S HANDBOOK by Idries ShahThis is the last book in the trilogy started with Darkest England and followed by The Natives are restless.
Having just completed re-reading these 3 books in the order they were written, one can see they were years ahead of their time. Although they received widespread critical acclaim when they came out ( “…full of insights and information assembled to present a view no English person could easily reach “ Sunday Times; “…trying to tell us something useful…a darker edge. Shah knows, and we know, that the foreigner’s problem has become ours; how to be English.” New Society; “Shah explains the English to themselves and to others with humor and insight. A fascinating and enjoyable read”, BBC et al) it was not possible when they were first published, at least for me, to realize the full depth of these extremely subtle essays on the English character.
To the adjectives “fascinating, insightful, witty, enjoyable, rich, scholarly researched”, and many others one could easily write, I would now add that this trilogy NEEDS to be read by anybody wishing to understand what is happening in England now and in the UK by extension. As a foreigner with 30 years’ experience of life in England, these books have been a revelation that led me to understand what a daily barrage of media today cannot explain. Highly recommended reading.

Every time I think I have got a handle on this book it morphs into something else. Much more sophisticated and nuanced than a quick read would suggest.

Book 3 of an entertaining trilogy. Not to be missed by those interested in English culture at a very insightful and humorous level. Reminds me of the very humor of "3 Men and a Dog".
