Narration Supposing Books The Monsters and Other Science Fiction Tales
I'm only a few stories in so I can't rate this properly yet but one story out has really stood out so far; The Cost of Living. I have the Wildside press publication of this book and it has no dates on it so I did a bit of digging and I think that Cost of Living was first published in Galaxy magazine in 1952. If this is the case (and if it isn't then I'm going to look like a complete fool) then it shows Robert Sheckley as quite the soothsayer. The story is about the trappings of so-called success and about debt. At the time of writing it, Sheckley must have been aware of the increase in Hire Purchase as a way of getting that must-have gadget in the boom that was happening back then. He satires the I-want-it-now-tomorrow-is-ages-away sentiment brilliantly, and although the story is a little dated in places, it stands as an even more astute observation now than it even could have done when it was written. And he predicts the invention of the cd multi-changer, which has been and gone since! How old do I feel?

great bunch of very short stories.
One of science fiction's great humorists, Sheckley was a prolific short story writer beginning in 1952 with titles including "Specialist", "Pilgrimage to Earth", "Warm", "The Prize of Peril", and "Seventh Victim", collected in volumes from Untouched by Human Hands (1954) to Is That What People Do? (1984) and a five-volume set of Collected Stories (1991). His first novel, Immortality, Inc. (1958),I'm only a few stories in so I can't rate this properly yet but one story out has really stood out so far; The Cost of Living.
