It is the late 1880s and the Great Famine has ravaged Ireland. The potatoes are black and rotten, and the people have nothing to eat. Eily, Michael and Peggy are alone in their cottage. Their parents went out in search of work and food, but never returned. Now the children must fend for themselves. This is one of the books from my childhood. I was in fourth class when our teacher first read this to us. I fell in love. From there I bough all three books and read them myself. To this day I can still remember reading these books, and this book was what got me hooked. It's my favourite in the trilogy. The book is based in the time of the great famine of Ireland. Incredible story, sorrow fills your heart as you read the harrowing story of 3 children who had no choice but to leave their home in search of their distant relatives to survive during the famine in Ireland. I particularly liked the use of colloquialisms like a sup of water and a cuppa Tay it really brings the story to life, you can hear the accents of the characters and start to price together the story as it unfolds really well in your mind. When I read this as a book clubs March Irish History pick I didnt realize it was a childrens book. It was a touching tale of three siblings during the Great Famine and was an easy, albeit sad read. If I had read this as a child it probably would have been a favorite and it was a quick read highlighting a journey of struggle during this period of Irish history.

This year i travelled to Ireland and fell in love with this beautiful country. I was interested in the history of it and decided to learn more. The theme of famine is really touching, in my country we also had such dreadfull expirience. Not me actually, but my great-grandmothers and their children. So, when i accidentally have found the trilogy of Marita Conlon-McKenna i decided to read it immediatly. I`m 26 years old, but i worried about three fellows and walked all the way with them. This book
